Boston Marriage

Boston Marriage

Boston marriage refers to the
cohabitation of two women who go about their lives free of male
support. The relationship can be romantic or platonic. It is about
women’s choice. They may feel more connected with a woman or think
that marriage is not a necessity, especially when they’re financially
and intellectually independent. These women are often feminists and
go about their lives doing what they want to do.

More About Boston Marriage

While Boston marriage sounds like a
modern concept, it was actually coined some time in the late 19th and early 20th century. It was said to have come from the Henry James novel The Bostonian, which was about two co-habiting women. They were then referred to as “new women.” Today, the concept is no longer new, but it remains empowering.
